We see children and youth facing especially profound adversity. Every TAP foster youth has endured not only severe abuse or neglect – serious enough to prompt outside intervention – but also the traumatic experience of being removed from their home, often without warning, and placed in an unfamiliar environment. At TAP, we recognize that trauma is not just part of their past – it can shape every aspect of their development and outlook. That is why all our staff and volunteers receive training in trauma-informed care, helping them understand the complex needs of our youth and how to best support their healing and growth.
The Co-Op is a structured, nurturing out-of-school time enrichment program designed specifically for foster youth ages 9-14. A dedicated team of adult mentors forms a consistent, stable support network during key afterschool hours. The Co-Op offers academic support, enrichment activities, field trips, partner services, healthy food, transportation assistance, family support, and more.
Camp Xavier is a summer full-day program held in week-long sessions each July at Loyola High School, less than a mile from The Co-Op, that is open to current and former foster youth ages 8-11. Camp Xavier encourages self-discovery, connection, and fun through a wide array of engaging activities. Importantly, Camp Xavier also gives foster youth the normalizing experience of camp, which decades of research shows promotes development, reduces stigma, and leaves youth emotionally and socially stronger.
